The Lagos State University Library commenced operations in November 1984 in accordance with the edict that set up the University. Like all University Libraries, it is the pivot on which all academic activities in the University are hinged and it is vital to the academic needs of users in many ways.

  • It enables you take maximum advantage of the available library resources and services;
  • Helps you to develop a life-long learning skill for research and private works as well as
  • Helps you to develop reading skills not only for functional but for recreational purposes.

The University operates on four campuses viz: Ojo, Epe, Ikeja and Surulere and each of these campuses has its own library. The main library (now known as Fatiu Ademola Akesode Library), which co-ordinate all the activities of the various units, divisions’ and other branch libraries is situated at the Ojo Campus. The Ojo Campus also houses the Teslim Olawale Elias Library (a.k.a. Law Library). Other Branch libraries are the Engineering Library at Epe, the Medical Library at Ikeja. All the campuses provide seating accommodation for up to 5000 Readers.

The total collection in the university Library four campuses is about 1,000000 volumes including journals and other special collections.

OPENING HOURS

The Libraries open to readers a follows:

During Session:           Monday – Friday        -           8.30am – 6.00p.m.

Saturday                 –           8.30am – 1.00pm

Sundays                 -           1.00pm – 5.00pm

During Vacations:       Monday – Friday        –            8.30am – 6.00pm

During Examinations: Monday – Friday        -           8.30am – 7.00pm

During Environmental Sanitation                   -           1.00pm – 5.00pm

During Public Holidays                                  -           Closed

 

ELIGIBILITY TO USE THE LIBRARY

No person may make use of the University Library until he has been duly registered with an undertaking to observe all library rules and regulations and has been issued with a library card. The card must be shown to any official of the library on demand and such official may prohibit entry to any reader who is unable to produce the library card.

The following are eligible to register as readers in the Library with the privileges of borrowing books and making use of reference materials.

  1. Members of the University Governing Council.
  2. Members of the College of Medicine.
  3. Members of the Academic Staff of the University as well as eligible senior members of Administrative and Technical Staff.
  4. Postgraduate and Research students of the University.
  5. Full-Time students of Lagos State University.

The following may use the Library for reference only:

  1. Graduates of the Lagos State University
  2. Visitors attending conferences, seminars or part-time courses in the University and
  3. Such other persons, as may be permitted by the University Librarian on a temporary basis.

ADMISSION INTO THE LIBRARY

At the main entrance of the Libraries, you are required to show your Library ticket to the Porter on duty who will check it to ensure that you are a registered member of the Library and that your card is current. Without the Library ticket, you will not be allowed into the Library. Then deposit your bag, umbrella and other personal effects at the Porter’s Lodge. Valuable items should however be removed from the bag before dropping the personal effects.

LIBRARY COLLECTIONS AND THEIR LOCATIONS

Materials that can be found in the main library consist of textbooks, journals, magazines, newspapers, government documents, special collections, audio-visuals resources and reference materials that have been acquired based on the university curriculum.
